Glossary
If you're not familiar with any of the
terms used on this site this page should help you out.
- Domain name
- The unique name of an Internet site
(e.g. byteways.co.uk).

- E-mail
- Stands for electronic mail and is the process of
sending messages sent from one person to another via the internet. The messages can be
text, pictures, sounds or a whole program. E-mail can be sent automatically to large
numbers of addresses known as mailing lists.
- Host
- A computer that stores web sites that is turned on 24
hours a day and that is always connected to the internet. This means that no matter what
time of day it is people can always access your web site.
- HTML
- Stands for HyperText Markup Language and is the
standard language used to create pages for use on the World Wide Web. Text and pictures
can be linked to other pages on the Internet using HTML.
- Internet
- The enormous collection of networks from all over the
world that are all linked together.
- Search engine
- A web site that people accessing the internet can use
to find something specific.

- Server
- A computer, or piece of software that houses or runs
programs that deal with various internet related operations e.g. email.
- Shockwave
- A fairly new web page format that enables lots of
graphics, sound and interactivity to be delivered on-line very quickly and neatly.
- World Wide Web (www)
- The huge collection of inter-linked web sites that
are available on the internet today.
